How to Win Your Fantasy Baseball League

Let me start by letting you know that there are an unlimited number of scoring formats and league settings when playing fantasy baseball.  It can get very complicated, but for the purpose of this article I am going to assume you are in a weekly head to head league that starts 9 hitters (including DH), 5 starting pitchers and 1 relief pitcher.  We are also going to assume that your league uses a standard draft so you won’t get any advice regarding an auction style draft.  The final assumption will be that this is a non-keeper league.

The most important part of winning at fantasy baseball is the player selections you make during your draft.  A great draft can set the foundation for a very successful campaign, but a terrible draft can be very difficult to overcome.  The best way to win the draft is to get access to an excellent source for fantasy baseball information.  There are several websites that provide all the info you will need to dominate your draft.

There are two vital parts to the service you select.  The first is the ability to predict the stats of players in the coming year.  It can get relatively complicated, but it should be based on the analysis of numerous quantitative factors such as the players past stats, age, trends and much more.  Many credit card processing services use software to make these determinations and some are done manually.  It doesn’t matter how it is done as long as it’s good data.  Make sure to check and see the past results of the service and how they rank.

The second crucial piece is drafting software.  The drafting software helps you prioritize which player to select at any moment in the draft.  This software uses the predicted stats of the players along with your scoring format to determine which players to choose.  There is one caveat, you software should take into consideration position scarcity.  Position scarcity tells you what positions have larger or smaller quantities of players that are predicted to have good seasons.  All things being equal, a player predicted to score the same number of points at a position that is scarce is more valuable than a player at a position that is plentiful.  In fact, more often than not, a player at a scarce position that that is predicted to score fewer points is more valuable than a player that scores more points at a deep position.

Once the draft is complete you have the responsibility to manage your team during the season.  These responsibilities include:

• Setting your lineup on a weekly basis based on matchups
• Monitoring free agents you may want to obtain if you believe they will outperform one of your current players
• Watch the other teams in your league closely
• Evaluate and make trade proposals
• Assess the minor leagues for any player that could eventually make an impact in the majors this season

You may be able to do all this with your own research or you can use your service, which should have daily updates about players in the league.

Winning fantasy baseball will take commitment and time to monitor everything going on in baseball.  Remember, the things you need to do during the season are important, but the key to winning is assembling the best team possible during the draft.
